Core Scripture

Genesis 1:26–28 (NLT)

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH

You were created to reign, not to merely survive.

Before sin entered the world, God established humanity with authority. Authority was not a reward for obedience later. It was part of creation itself. To be made in the image of God is to be made with delegated authority under His rule.

WHAT IT MEANS TO REIGN

Definition of Reign

To reign means:

• To rule or govern

• To exercise authority

• To have influence and responsibility

• To steward what God has entrusted

In Scripture, reigning is not about control or domination. It is about authority aligned with God’s character.

Key Truth

If God created you in His image, He created you with authority.

When you forsake God’s image in your life, you forsake His authority.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. When you hear the word reign, do you associate it with confidence or discomfort? Why?

2. How does knowing authority was given at creation change how you see yourself?

3. In what areas of your life do you act like authority is something you must earn instead of steward?

DOMINION IS AUTHORITY WITH RESPONSIBILITY

Dominion is not exploitation.

Dominion is stewardship.

Dominion means authority that answers to God.

God never separated authority from accountability.

Your life moves in the direction of what you allow and what you enforce.

1. What areas of your life feel unmanaged or chaotic right now?

2. What have you been tolerating that God has already given you authority over?

3. How does responsibility change the way you view authority?

IDENTITY AND AUTHORITY ARE CONNECTED

Many believers struggle because they operate from:

• Flesh

• Fear

• Circumstances

• Past trauma

• Personal desire

When identity shifts away from Christ, authority weakens.

Key Truth

If you want authority and victory, walk in the identity and image of Christ.

SCRIPTURE: Authority Through Identity

Romans 8:16–17 (NLT)

For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Ephesians 2:4–6 (NLT)

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,

that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved.

For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. What identity labels have you accepted that contradict Scripture?

2. How does being seated with Christ affect how you respond to pressure or opposition?

3. What would change if you truly lived as God’s possession instead of your own?

MEEKNESS IS NOT WEAKNESS

Weakness

• Inability to act

• Driven by fear or insecurity

• Avoids responsibility

• Powerless even when action is needed

Meekness

• Strength under control

• Power governed by wisdom

• Authority submitted to God

• Ability to act with restraint

Jesus was meek, yet He confronted injustice, cast out demons, commanded storms, and overturned tables.

Key Truth

Meekness is strength and authority guided by character.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. Where have you confused humility with passivity?

2. What would it look like for you to act with controlled strength instead of avoidance?

3. How did Jesus model meek authority in the Gospels?

AREAS GOD HAS GIVEN US AUTHORITY

Authority Over the Enemy

Luke 10:19 (NLT)

Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.

Authority to Go and Lead

Matthew 28:18–20 (NLT)

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always

James 4:7–8a (NLT)

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Come close to God, and God will come close to you.

Authority Through Identity in Christ

Authority Released Through Words
